Staying Healthy in 2021

Now that we are two months into 2021, many of us have created goals and resolutions to reset, refocus and recommit to health and wellness this new year. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people, and unfortunately, we are still trying to control this vicious virus. As we look to 2021, this is the perfect time to focus on things we can do to stay strong, healthy and optimistic. Here are some tips on staying healthy this year.

Stay Active

When it comes to immune health, exercising a few times a week may help you feel better. According to research, physical activity may reduce the risk of getting communicable diseases, including viral pathologies, such as COVID-19. The benefits of regular exercise for the immune system in respiratory infections include increased immunovigilance and improved immune competence, which help in the control of pathogens.

Remaining active can be a challenge due to social distancing regulations. However, there are still several ways you can stay active and keep your distance without going into a gym. Try going on a walk or run every other day. Not only does the great outdoors allow you to get some fresh air, but it can also boost your mental health.

Eat Healthy

Fueling your body with certain foods may help boost your immunity. Citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and clementines are high in vitamin C, which is believed to increase the production of white blood cells. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach, are supercharged with vitamins and minerals like vitamins A, C and E, as well as fiber.

Wash your Hands

One of the most effective ways to stay healthy is by washing your hands frequently. This not only prevents the spread of viruses but also helps avoid getting others sick. Cleaning your hands with soap and water removes germs from multiple sources that you’ve touched and can be the first line of defense against the spread of illnesses, such as the common cold, meningitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and many more.

Social Distance

COVID-19 is still not under control, so it is important to continue to practice social distancing in 2021. Physical distancing means keeping space between yourself and others outside your household, which is a vital step in helping to slow the spread of this virus. However, it is also important to practice habits, such as stress management, regular exercise, getting enough sleep and healthy eating to boost your immunity.

Take Supplements

You can support a healthy immune system by taking supplements that can help fight off pathogens before they cause a problem. Some of the best supplements for immune health include:

  • Vitamin C – Encourages the production and health of white blood cells, which protect the body against viral and bacterial infections.
  • Vitamin D – Promotes immune response to pathogens and is responsible for activating the immune system’s defenses.
  • Zinc – Essential for immune cell development and communication.
